With the unpredictable nature of hurricanes this season, it’s easy to feel like something is off. While Helene wasn’t the deadliest storm to hit our state, her impact has left many of us asking bigger questions…
OCTOBER/8/2024
Given the devastation we are seeing since Hurricane Helene visited, I assumed she would be one of the deadliest hurricanes in our history. But in fact she just barely makes the top ten for Florida hurricanes since 1935
She was the tenth strongest (measuring maximum sustained winds) hurricane to hit Florida, and the ninth most intense (measuring barometric pressure) hurricane to hit our great state. But still, with Milton bearing down on us, my mind is racing. I’m not an anxious person by nature, and I wouldn’t describe what I’m feeling as anxiety… perhaps just more intense thoughts about the situation.
I grew up here. I don’t recall ever missing school for a hurricane. Ever. I rode out the Storm of the Century in a dorm room on campus at The University of Florida. I don’t think they ever even canceled classes. And now my kids have missed school two of the last three weeks. Is it just me, or does this seem odd?
We Floridians are tough. We don’t get knocked down easily and we stand up strong after a hard hit. In addition to that, we have amazing leadership.
But could there be something else going on? When was the last time a hurricane formed in that part of the Gulf of Mexico? When was the last time you saw a hurricane traveling in this direction across the gulf?
Is it a coincidence that the storm is heading right for Pinellas County, which has historically been a democratic stronghold but has become more and more red every month since 2016? I’m just beginning my study of geoengineering. This is an absolutely new area of interest for me. You guys know me… of course I started with the history of geoengineering. I watched an interview with a US Navy Meteorologist who created rain in Vietnam. If he was able to create rain in Vietnam in the 1960s, what more are we capable of now, 60 years later?
Let me know what you think!! Am I onto something? Or am I being paranoid?
